Red, white or rosé wine? A look at the PLCB sales breakdown, by county, for 2018-19 - pennlive.com

Wine accounted for about 45 percent of the sales through the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) during the 2018-19 fiscal year, which ended June 30.

Here are a couple of highlights from the data on wine included in the PLCB’s most recent report.

  • What the PLCB calls regular wine amounted to sales of $851.6 million. The Chairman’s Selection and Advantage programs had sales of $80.4 million, and sales of luxury wine amounted to $64 million.
  • Retail sales of wine hit $800.7 million; that’s 74 percent of the wine that was sold. Sales to licensees not selling wine to go ($143M) and sales to licensees selling wine to go (($135.9M) accounted for the rest.
  • Breaking down all the product categories of wine and spirits, red table wine had the highest share of sales in these four counties: Chester, Bucks, Montgomery and Delaware. Whiskey had the highest share of sales in 62 counties, and vodka had the highest share in Carbon County.
  • On the list of top 10 product categories for sale, wine occupied three of the spots: California Cabernet Sauvignon ($87M) was third; California Chardonnay ($78.6M) was fifth and boxed wine ($54.2M) was eighth. As a reader noted in an email he sent to me after last week’s list on county-by-county sales was published: “I had no idea Pennsylvania sold that much boxed wine.”
  • Leading the Pennsylvania wines in sales were Clover Hill’s (Lehigh County) Concord, the Winery at Wilcox’s (Elk County) Clarion River Red, and Mazza Vineyards’ (Erie County) Concord. You can find the full list at this link.
  • Top-selling wines overall for the fiscal year were Apothic Red Winemaker’s Blend, Kendall-Jackson Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay and La Marca Prosecco. You can find the top 25 wines in dollar sales at this link.
  • Finally, the Chairman’s First Taste promotion continued to grow, to 8,390 unit sales during the most recent fiscal year. The program launched in August 2017 and gives customers 24 hours to buy a Chairman’s Selection wine at a discount inline, weeks before it’s available in stores. The promotion takes places every other month. More can be found on the Fine Wine & Good Spirits website.

The lists below rank the top 10 counties in sales for the following wine categories: beverage (sweet), boxed, red table wine, white table wine, rosé/blush and sparkling. It also includes the bottom five in sales (obviously, the state’s least-populate counties) and any of the four primary central Pa. counties (Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, York) that aren’t included in the top 10.
