B&M European Value Retail SA (BME.LN) said Friday that like-for-like sales at its core U.K. business were slower than expected over the Christmas period, citing a difficult retail environment and its decision not to discount early.
The budget retailer--which sells a variety of smaller household items and groceries--said U.K. like-for-like sales during the third quarter of fiscal 2020 were up 0.3%.
Group revenue for the 13 weeks ended Dec. 28 rose 9.3% to 1.19 billion pounds ($1.56 billion) from GBP1.09 billion in the third quarter of fiscal 2019.
It said the company has had a positive start to January but cautioned that the rest of the quarter could be hurt by seasonal weather conditions.
