Pot sales near $3.2M in state on 1st day - Northwest Herald

Sales neared $3.2 million as people lined up at dispensaries in Joliet and elsewhere on the first day recreational marijuana was legal in Illinois.

There were 77,128 transactions and $3,176,256 in sales on New Year’s Day at licensed dispensaries, Toi Hutchinson, senior adviser to the governor, said Thursday.

“Those lines actually show there’s an incredible opportunity to grow this industry,” Hutchinson said. “There’s new room for new people to come in.”

Illinois sales exceeded Michigan, which made recreational marijuana legal Dec. 1 and generated $3.1 million in sales in the first two weeks, and Colorado, where more than $1 million in sales were done on the first day of business, Jan. 1, 2014.

Illinois is the 11th state to allow the sale and use of recreational marijuana.

Localized Illinois sales numbers were not available.

Green Thumb Industries did not return calls or an email seeking information about how much business it did in Joliet at its two dispensaries.

But there were long lines Wednesday at both Rise, a GTI cannabis dispensary near the Louis Joliet Mall, and 3C Compassionate Care, a medical marijuana dispensary that the company has operated for four years at the Rock Run Business Park.

Rise Joliet opened at 6 a.m. with a few hundred people lined up outside the building at 2903 Colorado Ave., some arriving as early as 1:30 a.m. to be among the first legal buyers of recreational marijuana in Illinois.

Joliet interim Fire Chief Greg Blaskey said he drove by the site at noon and 4 p.m. to see if any safety problems were developing. There were lines of people around the building both times, but no sign of trouble being created by the amount of traffic, he said.

“I wanted to see if any areas of Colorado Avenue were blocked by a lot of traffic – if it was going to impede our access to the site,” he said.

The fire department received no calls for ambulance service to either dispensary, Blaskey said.

Joliet police were at the dispensaries as part of a city plan to control traffic in the first weeks of business.

On Thursday morning, there was no line outside Rise but the parking lot was full and police were there for traffic control. Rise also parked a food truck in the lot for its customers.
