The days of letting the expletives fly on Microsoft Corporation’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) XBox Live and Skype platforms may be a thing of the past if the company has its way. Microsoft’s new terms of service specifically call out the use of “offensive language,” but it’s unclear how the company is going to be enforcing the policy.
Mashable has the news on Microsoft’s TOS update.
Microsoft is updating its terms of service on May 1, and the news rules just so happen to explicitly prohibit the use of “offensive language” on its various platforms. Those platforms include Skype and Xbox Live.
That’s right, Microsoft is banning profanity on Xbox Live. Let that one sink in.
It’s not just offensive language that the tech giant is targeting, as it also calls attention to other “inappropriate content or material.” “If you violate these Terms, we may stop providing Services to you or we may close your Microsoft account,” the updated TOS reads in part.
Absent directly monitoring each and every conversation, it’s unclear how Microsoft would be able to completely remove language deemed to be offensive from the platforms. It looks like the company will be responding to complaints and investigating violations, so the company may have its hands full once the new TOS goes into effect.
Microsoft Corporation shares were trading at $90.17 per share on Wednesday morning, up $0.70 (+0.78%). Year-to-date, MSFT has gained 5.91%, versus a -1.71% rise in the benchmark S&P 500 index during the same period.
