Planning to shop post-Christmas sales? Look for deals on these products. - SILive.com

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- If you’re a late gift giver, or want to exchange a gift you received, you may be in luck.

The day after Christmas has become a prime sales day for stores looking to get rid of unsold holiday merchandise. Sales after Christmas have risen in recent years, allowing shoppers to score deals before the end of the year.

However, it’s important to be aware of what you’re planning to buy, as some items are priced higher after the holidays. Experts at DealNews.com and financial information website Investopedia.com have offered guidance about what to buy when shopping after Christmas.

Holiday décor

Starting the day after Christmas, DealNews.com expects to see sales cutting up to 80% off all holiday décor, and continue until just after the new year -- although pickings get slimmer as the days go on. Last year, DealNews.com said it saw excellent sales from Amazon, Macy’s, Lowe’s, Hallmark and others, so you can stock up on décor like trees, tinsel or trinkets.

Clothing

Last year, about a third of the post-holiday deals were for clothing and accessories. Clearance items saw the best sales. After-Christmas clearance sales were seen at J.Crew Factory, Cabela’s, Nordstrom Rack, Dick’s Sporting Goods and more. Many stores also choose this time for semi-annual sales, including Victoria’s Secret, Tory Burch, Armani Exchange and Michael Kors, according to DealNews.com.

Video games

More than half of the video game deals DealNews.com saw during post-Christmas sales were staff-pick worthy, which means they were some of the top games for the holiday season.

Electronics

Post-Christmas sales are a great place to shop for electronics. DealNews.com saw tons of electronic deals last year, include televisions and portable Bluetooth speakers. Some of the best deals were on refurbished items. Stores to watch for electronics deals this year include Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, B&H Photo Video and eBay.

Exercise equipment

DealNews.com said it sees more exercise equipment deals in January than in any other month. Stores know that exercising is a popular New Year’s resolution, and beginning to prepare tempting deals. Last year, Dick’s Sporting Goods cut up to 50% off exercising equipment, and Amazon cut up to 40%.

Toys and small gifts

Carrie Rocha, financial expert at Investopedia.com, said retailers are often left with excess stock of cosmetic sets, toys, spa gift baskets and more after Christmas is over.

“I watch for toy clearances at 70% off or more and then buy toys for my kids’ birthdays and to keep on hand for the birthdays of cousins and school friends,” says Rocha. “I pick up a supply of adult gifts for unexpected occasions as well. A spa set is a good gift for welcoming new neighbors, returning a kindness or just saying thank you.”

Food

The type of food in demand changes after the holidays, according to Investopedia. That means it’s the prime time to stock up on baking supplies, wine, cheese and seasonal flavors of products after Christmas.
