Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) Backs Away from Competitor Browser Warning

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was looking into a prompt that would discourage Windows 10 users from installing other browsers, but the company appears to have had a change of heart. While the prompt was tested out, it will not be included in new updates to the software.

The Verge has the news on Microsoft.

Microsoft started testing a warning for Windows 10 users last week that displayed a prompt when Chrome or Firefox was about to be installed. The software giant is now reversing this controversial test in its latest Windows 10 preview, released last Friday. The Verge understands Microsoft no longer plans to include this warning in the upcoming Windows 10 October 2018 Update that will ship next month, but that the company may continue to test these types of prompts in future updates.

The prompt encouraged users to stay with Microsoft’s built-in Edge browser when the installation process for the other browsers was started. In another test, the company attempted to get users to use Edge for all email needs, bypassing any other installed programs.

Feedback told the company all it needed to know, and it has now reversed course on plans for the update.

Microsoft Corporation shares rose $0.07 (+0.06%) in premarket trading Friday. Year-to-date, MSFT has gained 34.49%, versus a 10.95% rise in the benchmark S&P 500 index during the same period.

MSFT currently has a StockNews.com POWR Rating of A (Strong Buy), and is ranked #1 of 68 stocks in the Software – Application category.
