The retail experience continues to evolve for consumers, and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is working on technology that’s aimed at advancing the evolution even further. The tech giant is reportedly developing a futuristic retail system that will rival that of one of its fellow behemoths.
Retail Wire has the details on what Microsoft is working on.
Microsoft is working on autonomous-checkout technologies that could help retailers compete with Amazon’s cashierless stores.
Sources told Reuters that Microsoft is testing attaching cameras to shopping carts in order to track purchases as customers walk stores. Amazon Go’s system requires hundreds of cameras installed in the ceiling and Microsoft’s cart-camera set-up could prove to be more cost-effective.
In addition to the cameras, Microsoft is said to be working on checkout options that would revolve around smartphones. A report from Reuters suggests that Microsoft is already showing its technology off to retailers, including Walmart.
“From what I have read, Amazon Go’s technology is quite extensive and expensive. This opens the door to competition and to Microsoft,” shared Lee Kent of Your Retail Authority.
Microsoft Corporation shares fell $0.41 (-0.42%) in premarket trading Monday. Year-to-date, MSFT has gained 16.32%, versus a 2.52% rise in the benchmark S&P 500 index during the same period.
MSFT currently has a StockNews.com POWR Rating of A (Strong Buy), and is ranked #1 of 66 stocks in the Software – Application category.
